…….When Friendship Becomes a Bridge
By Ubong Ekefere
There is something profoundly symbolic about history extending an invitation.
A century-old institution, founded on the enduring philosophy that “Friendship is Good,” has chosen, at one of the defining moments of its existence, to entrust its centenary lecture to the hands of Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno.

That decision deserves reflection.
The Yoruba Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos, is not merely celebrating one hundred years of fellowship. It is celebrating the values that have sustained it since 1926—friendship, mutual respect, dialogue, and nation-building. Those same values have increasingly defined Governor Umo Eno’s approach to leadership.
His lecture, “Democracy and the Imperative of Good Governance: Renewing Hope in Challenging Times,” comes at a time when Nigerians seek more than political promises. They seek leadership that restores confidence, builds bridges, and reminds the people that democracy finds its true meaning in service. It is therefore no coincidence that a distinguished Yoruba institution looked beyond regional boundaries to Akwa Ibom for this landmark conversation. It is another affirmation that good governance speaks a language understood across cultures.
For Akwa Ibom, the invitation is more than an honour; it is a celebration of a long-standing friendship between two peoples whose histories are united by enterprise, hospitality, and an abiding faith in the Nigerian project. It is a reminder that while geography may define our states, shared values define our nation.
Governor Umo Eno’s presence at the centenary is therefore not only personal recognition. It is recognition of Akwa Ibom as a state steadily earning national respect through purposeful leadership and inclusive governance.
As the Yoruba Tennis Club marks one hundred remarkable years, one message echoes beyond its historic walls: friendship remains one of democracy’s greatest strengths, and leadership that unites will always find a place in history.
Perhaps that is the real significance of today’s lecture, not simply that Governor Umo Eno will speak, but that through him, Akwa Ibom will speak to Nigeria about hope, partnership, and the enduring power of building bridges instead of barriers.
After all, Akwa Ibom and Lagos states have similar geophysical features, like access to the Atlantic ocean which is a major stimulant to the latter’s economy.
