Wigwe University appoints Deputy Vice Chancellor

Wigwe University has announced the appointment of Professor Chinyere N. Ukaga as its Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

The appointment was announced Friday, July 17, by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi, following the 21st Meeting of the University’s Governing Council held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

Professor Ukaga has been an integral part of WU’s journey, serving as the University’s pioneer Director of Academic Planning and Head of the Quality Assurance and Academic Standards Unit.

“Her dedication to academic excellence and institutional growth has helped shape the strong foundation upon which Wigwe University continues to thrive”, the Vice Chancellor said.

Prof Chinyere Ukaga

Chinyere, was the 1999 best graduating Ph.D student of the University of Nigeria Nsukka winning both the Vice Chancellor’s Prize and the Faculty of Science Prize. She was a Federal Government scholar at both the secondary school level (Fed. Govt. Girls College Onitsha) and Master’s degree level (University of Nigeria Nsukka). She is presently a Professor of Public Health Parasitology of Imo State University Owerri.

Chinyere holds a Ph.D degree in Medical Parasitology from the Department of Zoology University of Nigeria Nsukka. The Ph.D program was supported by the Tropical Diseases Research (TDR)/ World Health Organization (WHO) training grant with Dr. Hartwig Schulz-Key (University of Tubingen Germany) as co – supervisor.

Chinyere has more than 24 years post graduate research and teaching experience. She has to her credit more than 145 publications in reputable journals, produced more than 42 PhD graduates, as well as numerous MSc graduates.

She consulted for the African Program on Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) now ESPEN a subsidiary of World Health Organization, AFRO (another subsidiary of WHO) and has consulted for the Federal Government of Nigeria on the Niger Delta Federal Amnesty Program.

Chinyere has served Imo State University Owerri in various capacities including Head, Department of Animal & Environmental Biology (Zoology), the Director, Consultancy Services Unit, the first Director Quality Assurance unit, Member of the Imo State University 7th Governing Council. She is presently the first female Director Academic Planning Unit of Imo State University Owerri.

Chinyere was the immediate past National President of the Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria. She is an International Council member (representing Africa) of the International Society of Infectious Diseases (ISID) based in Brookline MA USA.
