Yesterday, I departed Akwa Ibom on an educational advancement trip to the Federal Capital Territory. Upon arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, I was received by a driver from Benue State who conveyed me directly to the National Assembly Complex for my engagement.
The moment he picked me up, he overheard me speaking in the Ibibio language as I called to inform my wife that I had landed safely. His curiosity was immediately piqued, and he began to ask several questions about Akwa Ibom State.
The very first question he posed was about the magnificent structure at the Victor Attah International Airport. He said he had seen pictures of it and could not believe it was in Nigeria. At some point, he even thought it was an AI-generated image.
When I ended my call, I responded calmly that it was not an AI creation. I explained that it was brought to life by visionary leadership in Akwa Ibom State. His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, initiated the project, and His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, completed it with the installation of world-class, technologically advanced airport equipment.
He was genuinely amazed. He doubted that such a feat could occur in Nigeria, coming from a background where succeeding governments often abandon projects initiated by their predecessors.
I cut in and told him that Akwa Ibom has been blessed with leaders who do not engage in destructive politics. They do not allow taxpayers’ money to go to waste simply because they did not conceive a project themselves. Continuity and patriotism have guided governance in our state.
My driver was so inspired that he told me he would take two days off work, fly to Akwa Ibom, take pictures, and send them to his friends abroad with the caption, “Made in Nigeria.” He was overwhelmed that such a marvel could exist in our country.
I then proceeded to explain to him that the Victor Attah International Airport is a Smart Terminal Building
The ultra-modern, fully automated concourse is equipped with _biometric security screening, self-service baggage drop points, and automated check-in kiosks. It efficiently processes both domestic and international passengers with minimal human interface.
The terminal also houses an _aviation medical clinic_ that meets the standard of a general hospital, ensuring prompt medical response for travelers and staff. The _executive lounge_ operates on a buffet standard, where passengers can select meals of their choice in a serene and dignified environment.
One of the most impressive features is the intelligent HVAC system. The temperature within the building is regulated robotically in synchronization with the external weather. When it is excessively hot outside, the interior remains cool, and when it is cold, the system introduces a subtle warmth to ensure passenger comfort.
Furthermore, the building is fitted with _advanced security and safety infrastructure. It has explosive and firearms detection systems that can identify threats within seconds. In the event of a fire outbreak, there is an automated fire suppression system with sprinklers and extinguishers strategically installed. The roof is fitted with fire-retardant materials and the electrical and civil installations were designed to meet international fire-resistance codes.
Beyond aesthetics, the airport represents what a modern Nigerian public facility should be, efficient, secure, comfortable, and future-ready. It integrates smart technology, sustainable design, and passenger-centered services in a way that rivals airports in Dubai, Doha, and Singapore.
For me, that conversation was a reminder that good governance leaves footprints people can see and talk about. Akwa Ibom has set a benchmark, and it is my hope that other states will emulate this model of continuity, professionalism, and excellence.
As my driver dropped me off, his last words were, “Brother, I must go and see this airport with my own eyes.” That, to me, is the power of visionary leadership.
First, the Victor Attah International Airport is more than a structure of glass and steel. It is a statement of intent. It tells the world that Nigeria can build and sustain infrastructure that meets global standards when there is political will, technical competence, and a commitment to continuity.
The airport has become an ambassador for Akwa Ibom, and by extension, for Nigeria, challenging outdated narratives about what is possible on our soil.
Secondly the real value of this project lies in its economic multiplier effect. A smart airport does not just move people, it attracts investors, boosts tourism, creates jobs, and positions the state as a hub for commerce and logistics.
With facilities that meet international aviation requirements, Akwa Ibom is now better placed to host global conferences, receive direct international flights, and compete favorably for foreign direct investment. This is development that translates directly into prosperity for the common man.
Thirdly ,the story of this airport will serve as a template for governance across Nigeria. When leaders prioritize the people over politics, and completion over credit, taxpayers get value.
Governor Udom Emmanuel laid the foundation, and Governor Umo Eno built upon it. That seamless transition proves that governance can rise above partisanship. If other states borrow this culture of finishing what was started, Nigeria will witness a new era of infrastructure that truly serves its citizens.
Akwa Ibom has shown the way. The rest of the nation must now follow.
