President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The Presidency said the directive is in line with provisions of the Electoral Act and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the polls.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) and signed by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
According to the statement, the directive applies to all categories of presidential political appointees intending to participate in party primaries or seek nomination for any elective office.
Those affected include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants and personal assistants to the President. It also covers directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government parastatals, agencies, commissions and government-owned companies, as well as other political appointees.
The government directed all affected officials to submit their formal resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on or before the March 31 deadline.
The Presidency said the move is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, promoting transparency and providing a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It added that the administration remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible electoral processes in the country.
