The Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdul’Aziz Abubakar Yari, has appealed to northerners to allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to complete his eight-year tenure in the spirit of fairness and the principle of rotational presidency.
Senator Yari made the appeal while speaking to journalists at the Kano Government House on Saturday, after a closed-door meeting with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The former Zamfara State governor said the North must be gentlemanly and respect the political arrangement that brought the presidency to the South in 2023, after the North held it for eight years under former President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2023.
According to him, since independence 66 years ago, the North has led the country for 47 years, and Nigerians must recognise the importance of unity and equitable power sharing.
“The only viable option now is for the North to be gentlemanly in the arrangement and allow Tinubu to complete his eight-year tenure. As we love this country, we don’t have any country other than Nigeria,” he said.
He stressed that his role as DG of the Campaign Council was not just to promote President Tinubu but to also promote national unity and understanding.
Yari recalled how Tinubu resisted pressure from some APC power blocs to contest against Buhari in 2019, insisting it was the turn of the North, and supported Buhari till the end.
“For us in the North, it is time to pay Tinubu back for allowing the North to complete its full term. There is no excuse for us from the northern region not to support Tinubu to continue the good job he started,” he added.
