Two days after the Managing Director of NDDC, Samuel Ogbuku announced in Benin City, Edo State, that the commission would intervene in the failed portions of the Benin–Sapele axis of the Benin–Asaba/Sapele Road, the Commission has commenced work.
On Friday, Ogbuku went with the Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, the Executive Director, Projects, Victor Antai and some Directors of the Commission to Delta State, where the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, flagged off the reconstruction of the Benin–Sapele Expressway at the Amukpe Roundabout.
Also present at the ceremony were the Edo State Representative on the NDDC Governing Board, Hon. Patrick Aisowieren; the Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ede Dafinone; and the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on NDDC, Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu.
The intervention is being undertaken by the NDDC in compliance with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to urgently address critical infrastructure challenges confronting communities and road users across the Niger Delta.
Representing Governor Oborevwori at the flag-off ceremony, the Commissioner for Works and Public Communication, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, commended the NDDC for demonstrating a strong spirit of partnership with the governors of the nine Niger Delta states.
To deliver a strong, durable and resilient road, the Commission has mobilised two reputable civil engineering firms, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Ronan and Flann Limited, to execute the intervention using a rigid pavement design.
Already, the NDDC has scoped approximately 15.4 kilometres, covering the stretch from Benin through Ologbo Junction to Sapele.
This intervention underscores our commitment to translating the directives of Mr. President into tangible development outcomes for the people of the Niger Delta.
Ogbuku says the commission will continue to work with the Federal Government, state governments and other critical stakeholders to address infrastructure deficits and deliver projects that improve connectivity, stimulate economic activity and enhance the quality of life of our people.
