Iyabo Obasanjo dumps APC six months after joining Part

Former senator representing Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), barely six months after joining the ruling party.
Obasanjo announced her resignation in a statement issued on Monday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, saying the decision followed extensive consultations and careful reflection on developments within the party.
In a resignation letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun State APC Chairperson, Yemi Sanusi, the former lawmaker cited what she described as a lack of recognition and respect for her contributions to the party.
She said she joined the APC in good faith and worked to strengthen its grassroots support across Ogun Central Senatorial District and other parts of the state.
The former governorship aspirant noted that throughout her bid for the party’s ticket, she remained committed to internal democracy, fairness and mutual respect.
According to her, she accepted the party’s consensus arrangement in the interest of unity and subsequently worked constructively with the chosen candidate.
However, she said her sacrifices, contributions and the aspirations of her supporters were not adequately recognised.
“After deep reflection and wide consultations, I have formally communicated my decision to resign my membership of the APC,” she said.
“As I stated in my letter to the leadership of the party, when disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table.”
Obasanjo expressed appreciation to Bola Tinubu and other party leaders for the courtesies extended to her during her brief stay in the APC.
She also reaffirmed her commitment to service, justice, fairness and the continued development of Ogun State and Nigeria.
Her resignation comes about two months after she lost her bid to secure the APC governorship ticket in Ogun State.
In April, the party adopted Solomon Adeola as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
Obasanjo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, previously served as senator for Ogun Central on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) between 2007 and 2011.
She returned to active partisan politics earlier this year after a lengthy absence from the political scene.
