The Niger Delta Coalition Communities has appealed to Ambassador Asu Ekiye and his ex wife, Dr. Kunemofa Asu, to exercise restraint and handle their personal and family matters privately.
In a statement signed by Alfred Etuk on behalf of the chairmen and leaders of the coalition, the group expressed solidarity with both individuals, describing them as people who had contributed to the cultural, professional and social development of the Niger Delta.
The coalition particularly appealed to the parties to avoid further public commentary on matters concerning their former relationship, saying continued public discussions could deepen hurt and misunderstanding.
The group also urged members of the public, media organisations and social media commentators to refrain from speculation, unverified claims and personal attacks over the matter.
It said its intervention was not intended to assign blame or prejudge the circumstances surrounding the dispute, but to promote peace, dignity and a peaceful resolution.
The coalition urged both parties to address matters involving their family through appropriate and peaceful channels, while calling on the public to respect their privacy.
It said the contributions of both Asu Ekiye and Dr. Kunemofa Asu to the Niger Delta should not be overshadowed by their current personal circumstances.
The coalition said its position was guided by “compassion over condemnation, prayer over speculation, and peace over controversy.”
