President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address a Special Joint Sitting of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, 2025, as part of events commemorating Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

Spokesman, House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, said the President will serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the joint session, which is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. at the House of Representatives Chamber, National Assembly Complex.

June 12 was officially recognised as Nigeria’s Democracy Day in 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari in honour of the annulled 1993 presidential election presumed to have been won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola.

President Tinubu is expected to deliver a Democracy Day address at noon, with the theme of this year’s celebration being: “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”

The Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, had earlier conveyed the development to lawmakers through an internal memorandum.

Rotimi said the programme would also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of national honours on selected legislators by the President.

Describing the session as a significant milestone, the House said it reflects Nigeria’s steady democratic progress since 1999 and the National Assembly’s central role in promoting accountability and good governance.
