The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commenced search-and-rescue operations following the crash of an ATR-42 aircraft in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State.

The aircraft, with registration number NGR 931, was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when it crashed on Monday, October 5, 2026.

The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the operation was being conducted in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies.

According to him, the Air Force had activated an immediate search-and-rescue operation following the accident and was committed to ensuring its success.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, confirmed that 32 people, comprising 25 passengers and seven crew members, were on board the aircraft.

Keyamo said air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft at about 9:13 a.m., after attempts to raise it on radio proved unsuccessful.

He said subsequent information indicated that the aircraft had crashed near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, where the wreckage was later located.

The minister said the identities and condition of those on board were not immediately available, as search-and-rescue operations were still ongoing.

Keyamo also clarified that the regulation and control of military aircraft fall outside the authority of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

He said he had spoken with the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and assured that his ministry would provide full cooperation and assistance in the ongoing operation.
