The Swiss have just beaten Colombia on penalties after a goalless draw in 120 minutes of play. It wasn’t an exciting match. Both teams lacked fluidity, but the Swiss edged it.
It’s not been a glorious tournament for South America. Argentina are the only country from that region still standing. This is Europe’s tournament—they have six of the eight quarter-final slots; Argentina and Morocco take the other two.
I wasn’t impressed by Colombia’s football—it was heavy, physical, and predictable; they lack a talisman. They missed two penalties.
The only Swiss player who missed his penalty was Akanji. He’s once again shown he’s not a penalty taker—he lost one against England in the Euros in 2024. He should stop taking penalties.
Switzerland play Argentina in the quarter final. Nothing is impossible in this tournament. Argentina narrowly escaped defeat to Egypt last night.
