The Presidency on Tuesday confirmed the resignation of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, alongside the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, saying both officials voluntarily stepped down and were not removed from office.
In a statement on Wednesday issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said Edun’s exit was informed by health considerations after recent medical concerns.
According to the statement, the 70-year-old former minister of Finance submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu on Monday, his birthday, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Edun wrote.
The Presidency disclosed that before the announcement of his replacement, Edun paid a valedictory visit to the President at the State House, where both men held an hour-long discussion.
It added that the former minister, an economist and investment banker with decades of experience in public and private finance, would now focus on his health and private engagements.
Similarly, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, also tendered his resignation, thanking the President for the opportunity to serve since his appointment in August 2023.
Dangiwa, an architect and former Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, was praised for his contributions to housing sector reforms under the current administration.
President Tinubu, according to the statement, expressed appreciation to both ministers for their service and contributions to ongoing economic and housing reforms, describing their tenure as impactful.
Meanwhile, the President has approved the nomination of Mr Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of Finance to sustain and deepen ongoing fiscal reforms. He is also expected to forward the nomination of Muttaqha Rabe Darma to the Senate as Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
The Presidency said the new appointees are expected to consolidate existing reforms and advance the administration’s economic and fiscal policy objectives with renewed focus and innovation.
