The National Police Council on Monday officially confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), formally ratifying his appointment as Nigeria’s 23rd police chief.
The council, chaired by President Bola Tinubu and attended by state governors, endorsed Disu’s appointment at its meeting held at the State House, Abuja.
President Tinubu had previously appointed Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police on February 24, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun. In accordance with the 1999 Constitution and the Police Act, the appointment required the council’s confirmation before assuming office on a substantive basis.
A career police officer, Disu brings decades of operational and administrative experience to the role.
He has served as Commissioner of Police in both Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Special Protection Unit (SPU).
Disu’s confirmation marks a formal transition in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force at a time when the country continues to face complex security challenges.
The council meeting was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam.
Also present were Hashimu Argungu, Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), along with deputy governors from Kogi and Delta states, participated in the session.
Other attendees included Sen. Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of Police Affairs, Olubunmi Ojo, Minister of Interior, and several cabinet members.
The confirmation is expected to strengthen continuity in policing strategies and leadership as Disu assumes the helm of the Nigeria Police Force.
