President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has formally accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, citing pressing family considerations.
The development was announced on Tuesday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023 for a four-year tenure set to end in June 2027, was commended by the President for his decades of service, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture.
In his stead, President Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police, with immediate effect.
The President expressed confidence in Disu’s operational experience and leadership capacity to provide steady guidance for the police during this period of security challenges.
According to the statement, in compliance with the Police Act 2020, the Nigeria Police Council will soon convene to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP, after which his nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to fulfill its constitutional duties.
