Former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Katsina State..
He cited insecurity and what he described as the poor performance of the current administration as reasons to contest the number one seat in the seat.
Daura served as Director-General of the Department of State Services during the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
He was relieved of his appointment in 2018 by then Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, who was serving as Acting President while Buhari was out of the country. when Buhari was out of the country.
Speaking in an interview with DCL Hausa on Tuesday, Daura said he had concluded consultations on his political ambition and would soon disclose the platform on which he plans to run.
“I have been making consultations on the platform to use to contest, and the consultations have been concluded. Very soon, I will make the platform known,” he said.
Daura criticised the incumbent administration, arguing that leadership should be evaluated strictly on performance.
“Why do people serve for one or two terms? If they get it right, fine. But if the reverse is the case, then there is no point in seeking re-election. It is obvious the current governor is not capable,” he stated.
Using a metaphor, the former intelligence chief said governance should not be allowed to damage the state.
“It is like putting a load on somebody and adjusting it. If he complains that the load is too heavy, you have to take it down to avoid destroying fragile items. For the current administration, we can say thank you for your efforts, but you should take a break because you can’t continue,” he added.
Daura also said he had not originally planned to seek elective office, noting that his involvement in politics had largely been behind the scenes.
“I never saw myself coming out to contest. I admire politics, but I only participated from the background,” he said.
