The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a three-day extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Anambra State following the registration of 96,085 new voters in just nine days.
Originally slated to end on Thursday, July 17, the exercise will now conclude on Sunday, July 20, 2025, as the state gears up for its off-cycle governorship election scheduled for November.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said the Commission was impressed with the peaceful conduct and high turnout of prospective voters across the 326 registration centres in the state.
Olumekun disclosed that of the new registrants, 56,017 (58 per cent) are female, while 50,429 (52.48 per cent) are youth between the ages of 18 and 34.
Additionally, 12,595 persons applied for transfer of registration within and outside the state, while 7,061 sought updates to their records or replacements for lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
He said: “On average, the Commission registered over 10,600 voters per day. In addition, 12,595 voters applied for transfer of their registration both within and outside the State while 7,061 persons applied for the update of their records or the replacement of their damaged or lost Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).
“However, in response to appeal from citizens, the Commission hereby extends the exercise for three more days. It will now end on Sunday 20th July 2025. Thereafter, the Commission will display the register for claims and objections by citizens as provided by law, followed by a further clean-up of the data using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).
-Subsequently, the detailed breakdown of the new registrants by age, gender, occupation and disability will be published for public information. At this preliminary stage, 56,017 of new registrants are female while 50,429 are young people between the ages of 18 and 34.
He said the commission has received five new applications from associations seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number of such applications to 134.
They are Green Future Party (GFP), Affirmative Action Party of Nigeria (AAPN), A Better Alliance for Nigeria (ABA), New National Democratic Party (NNDP) and Advanced Progressive People’s Alliance (APPA).
Olumekun said details of the proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership of the associations have been published on the Commission’s website and other platforms for public information.
