Former Bayelsa State Governor and Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Seriake Dickson, on Thursday announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and unveiled a new political platform, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), as we exclusively reported yesterday.
Dickson made the announcement at a press conference in Abuja, citing the deepening crisis within the PDP which, according to him, has left the party politically incapacitated ahead of the next general elections.
He said the once-dominant opposition party was now in a critical condition, likening its current state to a patient in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
“The PDP today is practically in the Intensive Care Unit. The level of internal crisis and disorganisation is such that the party may not even be able to produce credible candidates for the forthcoming elections,” he said.
Dickson explained that his decision to leave the party was borne out of conviction and concern about the shrinking space for credible opposition politics in the country.
According to him, the newly formed Nigeria Democratic Congress would serve as a formidable opposition platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He warned against attempts by the administration of President Bola Tinubu to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, pledging that the NDC would mobilise democratic forces across the country to resist such a development.
