President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday swore in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police at a ceremony held inside the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.
Disu took the oath of office at 2:53 pm after his citation was read by the State House Director of Information and Public Relations, Abiodun Oladunjoye.
The brief ceremony was witnessed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the Federal Executive Council and other senior government officials.
The President arrived at the venue at about 2:48 pm. The National Anthem was rendered before the formalities commenced.
Immediately after administering the oath on Disu, Tinubu also swore in newly appointed commissioners of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission and the Federal Civil Service Commission.
The event preceded the Federal Executive Council meeting, which began at 3:01 pm, the first council session for the year.
Those sworn in as members of the Federal Civil Service Commission include Prof. Ngbea Gabriel (Benue) and Omoregie Idahagbon (Edo).
New commissioners of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission are Abubakar Wamakko (Sokoto), Sen. Marafa Abba (Taraba), Ahmed Waziri (Adamawa), Hadizatu Mustapha (Borno), Helen Bob (Bayelsa) and Oladele Gboyega (Osun).
Disu’s confirmation followed his unanimous endorsement by the Nigeria Police Council on Monday.
Among dignitaries present at the ceremony were Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike; and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Esther Walson-Jack.
According to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu at Monday’s Police Council meeting, commending his record of service, particularly as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021.
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah also supported the appointment, while Wike recalled Disu’s tenure in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and the anti-kidnapping unit between 2014 and 2015.
Disu’s elevation comes barely a week after Tinubu appointed him acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun on February 23, 2026.
Born on April 13, 1966, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. Over the years, he has obtained qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security studies, legal psychology and entrepreneurship.
Before his latest appointment, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.
Like his predecessor, Disu worked under Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State governor from 1999 to 2007, serving as Aide-de-Camp while Egbetokun was Chief Security Officer.
At his decoration as acting IGP last week, the President urged him to strengthen discipline within the Force, deepen inter-agency collaboration and restore public confidence in policing.
In response, Disu pledged to enforce zero tolerance for corruption, impunity and human rights abuses within the Nigeria Police Force.
