The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi announced his defection on Tuesday at a political rally held at the Nike Lake Resort Hotel, Enugu.
Speaking at the event, the former Anambra State governor said the decision was driven by a renewed commitment to what he described as a rescue mission for Nigeria.
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” Obi said. “We will resist rigging of elections by every lawful means in 2027.”
Obi defected with some leaders and political stakeholders from the South-East geopolitical zone who also formally declared their support for the ADC.
The leaders said their decision followed months of extensive consultations within the zone.
According to them, the move to the ADC is aimed at building a broad opposition coalition that will collaborate with like-minded political leaders across the country to rescue Nigeria from the poor governance of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obi joined the ADC alongside many of his former supporters from the Labour Party.
