The Independent National Electoral Commission has declined to recognise the Kabiru Turaki led National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, citing existing court judgments and ongoing legal disputes within the opposition party.
INEC made its position known in a letter dated December 22, 2025, signed by its Secretary, Dr Rose Oriaran Anthony. The commission stated that it could not act on any request to acknowledge or upload the list of national officers claimed to have emerged from the PDP National Convention held in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, 2025.
According to the electoral body, the leadership tussle within the PDP remains the subject of litigation, making it inappropriate for INEC to recognise any factional national officers at this time. The commission emphasised that its actions must strictly align with subsisting court decisions until the disputes are fully resolved.
The rejection represents the latest development in the prolonged crisis rocking the PDP, which has been marked by parallel claims to party leadership and deep internal divisions.
INEC maintained that it would continue to monitor the situation and abide by the final outcome of the judicial processes surrounding the party’s leadership structure.
