Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State.
The registration took place on Monday, days after Atiku met with ADC supporters and stakeholders in the state.
His aide, Abdul Rasheeth, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday.
Videos and photos from the event captured jubilant scenes as Atiku’s convoy arrived to the warm reception of supporters, who sang, beat drums, and waved placards bearing his portrait.
The former vice president acknowledged the crowd, waving from his vehicle as he received his ADC membership card.
Shortly after the ceremony, Atiku posted on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “It’s official. –AA.”
Atiku had in July resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a political platform he helped to found in 1998, citing a departure from the party’s founding principles.
In a letter dated July 14 and addressed to the chairman of the PDP in his Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku said his resignation was with immediate effect.
“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” he wrote. “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.
Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s vice president between 1999 and 2007, expressed gratitude to the PDP for the platform it provided him to serve and twice contest the presidency—in 2019 and 2023
His registration for ADC brings formal backing to the coalition platform he endorsed in July, an alliance involving other key opposition figures such as Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal—L aimed at presenting a united challenge to President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Until now, Atiku and several opposition leaders had delayed officially joining the ADC.
His entry is expected to boost the party’s profile and further consolidate opposition forces ahead of the polls.
