Two members of the House of Representatives from Kano State have officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers, Sagir Koki, representing Kano Municipal Federal Constituency and Abdulmumin Jibrin, representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, cited persistent internal crises and divisions within the NNPP.
Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, read letters of defection from the lawmakers during Thursday’s plenary.
Present at the chambers to receive the lawmakers into the APC is National Chairman of the party, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, former chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Former Kano State Deputy Governor, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, among other party faithfuls
Koki stated in his letter that his decision to leave the NNPP is born out of the deep internal crisis, lack of cohesion, and incurable divisions within the party, both at the national and state levels.
He added that consultations with constituents, political associates, and stakeholders informed his move, noting that aligning with the APC would allow him to provide effective representation and contribute to national development.
On his part, Jibrin, representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, stated that the party’s unresolved internal conflicts at the national level made it “difficult, if not impossible” to discharge his duties effectively.
He expressed gratitude to the NNPP for the opportunities and support he received during his membership.
