No fewer than 10 professors have signified interest in becoming the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo, as the incumbent, Prof. Nyaudo Ndaeyo, completes his five-year tenure next December. Ndaeyo, a professor of Farms System, was named VC on October 6, 2020, but his term commenced on December 4, 2020. He’s the eighth substantive VC since it was established 40 years ago. He succeeded Professor Enefiok Essien, a lawyer.
Among the 10 contenders are some who vied for the position five years ago. Although the race will officially commence around July when the university will advertise for the position in newspapers, interested candidates have begun early preparations, which typically include consulting members of council and other influential persons. Among the early contenders are Professor Gabriel Umoh of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension; Professor Enoidem Usoro, former deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the university; Professor Effiong John of the Department of Theatre Arts and Professor Edet Joshua Udoh, also of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension.
In addition to possession of a strong academic background, significant experience in university administration and proven leadership skills, a candidate must have been a professor for at least 10 years to qualify to vie for the position of VC of the University. The selection process entails rigorous interviews by the council of the university. Premium is placed on candidate’s experience and reputation.
Interestingly, University of Uyo has a history of relatively peaceful selection process for its top leadership position, unlike a few others.
